This presentation will highlight implications for practice from qualitative research that compared the experiences of youth leaving home to live on their own to youth leaving care for independent living. Young people from the community were interviewed in the hopes of discovering turning points in the trajectory towards independence that could inform interventions for youth aging out of care. Youth from care were interviewed to consider the relevance of findings from the normative sample.
What emerged was a model of home leaving as a developmental process, which represented a significant crisis for home leavers as well as care leavers. Adaptation was influenced by external supports as well as attitudes and abilities. Questions raised for practice are: how can placement resources provide an appropriate safety net? What kinds of policies can support normative experimentation with autonomy? What barriers exist in group care to supportive friendhips among youth who are aging out?
