One key aspect of children’s socialization is their citizenship education. Apart from school providing a subject to this end, the family and society in general must facilitate the formation of a citizen’s conscience. The construction of citizenship is a fundamental task for securing democracy and developing opportunities of social participation, especially for people in vulnerable groups like children at risk. This topic, educating for citizenship, is present to a more or less extent, explicitly or implicitly, in alternative care, which temporarily substitutes the family setting and therefore must provide the socialization mechanisms which normally correspond to parents. The purpose of this paper is to investigate how a non-forma/informal citizen education is present in residential care, specifically what perceptions Catalan professionals in this sector have of its importance and practice.
