Human trafficking is a growing transnational crime that is currently affecting children and young people in every society worldwide. The United Nations and the Council of Europe have adopted numerous international treaties in relation to the protection and assistance of trafficked children and young people. Despite these international developments, meeting the needs of trafficked victims within society appears to be questionable as the granting of such protection and assistance to trafficked victims is left at the discretion of each Member State rather than being a legal right. Therefore, the purpose of my study is to ascertain the effectiveness of the current protection and assistance measures that are granted to trafficked victims and to assess whether these measures are adequate and sufficient in ensuring trafficked victims successful recovery and reintegration into society. It is hoped that my research study will make recommendations relating to best practice for the future.
