The aim of this PhD study was to explore the experiences of care, leaving care and after care from the perspective of a group of young people who had lived in residential childcare institutions in Bangladesh. In the main the study looked at the care and well-being of children in three different types of institution - the NGO Home, the State care Home and the faith-based orphanage (madrasah). The study provides an in-depth understanding of the residential child care experience of young people, through intimate engagement in young people’s in-care, leaving care and after-care lives and experiences. By examining the experiences of children and young people in Bangladesh, we can see that residential childcare has the potential to offer a positive option for many disadvantaged children or children in need or at risk- thus inclusion in the mainstreaming society. Thus the findings of this study are quite challenging in a research context dominated by minority world conceptualisations.
